The Rajasthan Royals have appointed Lasith Malinga and Paddy Upton as coaches

Ahead of the upcoming IPL 2022 season, Rajasthan Royals have added Lasith Malinga and Paddy Upton to their coaching team. Malinga will be the side’s new fast-bowling coach and Upton has been brought in as the “Team Catalyst.”

Malinga, who previously played for the Mumbai Indians but resigned from professional franchise cricket in January, has traveled to Australia with Sri Lanka’s men’s team as their Bowling Strategy Coach. As a fast bowling coach for RR, he would be expected to “oversee the preparation of bowling schemes in the build-up and during the season” and “accelerate the growth of the young bowlers.”

Upton served as RR’s head coach from 2013 to 2015 and again in 2019, and as a Team Catalyst this year will “play a critical role in establishing team integration by bringing them together as a cohesive and mutually supporting unit, as well as looking after their mental well-being through the use of various mental conditioning processes and activities that aid in maintaining a healthy culture and environment, particularly within the constraints of being in a bio-bubble,” RR stated in a press release.

Upton will spend the first four weeks with the team inside the bubble and will then join the team virtually.

Kumar Sangakkara, who will continue as RR’s head coach throughout the season and Director of Cricket off the field, welcomed the two new members.
