5 All-Rounders who can still make an appearance in the IPL 2022

The IPL 2022 season is just more than a fortnight away and the mega auction saw the teams building new lineups that will be part of the squad for the foreseeable future. We were made to understand that each team was required to have at least 5 all-rounders and after the auction, we saw that the Chennai Super Kings and the Lucknow Super Giants ended up with 8 all-rounders, which is a great backup in case of injury threats.

Injuries aside, the last couple of weeks have been a bit of a tumultuous one for the teams as many key players started pulling out of the tournament citing personal reasons or looming international duty. In such cases, the franchises are allowed to sign players who went unsold in the mega auctions, and in this article, we will take a look at 5 all-rounder picks who could still make their way to a franchise before the tournament begins.

Number 1 – Moises Henriques

Moises Henriques has been a part of the Indian Premier League since 2009. Until the IPL 2019 season, the Australian used to find buyers via the auction. However, the all-rounder went unsold this time. Henriques has been sidelined despite his performance in the BBL season.

The 35-year old Australian may be knocking on in terms of age, but if there is a requirement for a batting all-rounder, Moises can offer great value to whichever side decides to pick him up. He can bat deep or even open the innings, thanks to his insane adaptability.

Number 2 – Shakib Al Hasan

To begin, this Bangladeshi legend requires no introduction in terms of global T20 competitions. The all-rounder has established himself as a reliable cricketer everywhere he has played. Shakib Al Hasan was not sold at the big auction, maybe due to his extensive worldwide connections. However, if a replacement position becomes available, the 34-year-old will be an excellent prospect for many.

With this season of the IPL taking place at smaller tracks, Shakib’s batting can be put to excellent use. He can play on top of the order or be used a floater, making him a great player to have in the squad. Add to that his bowling ability, several captains will benefit from the variations on the flat decks.

Number 3 – Ben Cutting

The Australian has been playing really well in the domestic T20 leagues around the world, most recently, the PSL. We were pleasantly surprised to see him go unsold at the Mega Auction, but it may have been because of his age as the teams were looking for long-term signings.

That said, Ben offers a great replacement if a team needs someone who can come down the order and smash those vital last minutes runs. He did have bowling ability, but these days, he is considered pretty ordinary for a mainstream bowling choice.

Number 4 – Hayden Kerr

The 25-year old Australian came to life in the knockout stages of the Big Bash League and we expected him to get picked up by one of the IPL franchises but it was shocking to see him go unsold, probably because of a lot of left arm bowling options who just had a bigger reputation. He finished the Big Bash League with 25 wickets to his name and while his batting is nothing to write home about, he can absolutely light it up with the ball.

There will be a requirement for a bowling all-rounder and we expect Hayden to be one of the first names to get picked up.

Number 5 – Roston Chase

A West-Indian who is actually tailor made for the IPL, Roston may not be the youngest of the lot, but when it comes to his impression in the T20 format, you just cannot overlook his ability. He is very effective in the top order with the bat and his bowling has been well spoken of as well.

The shorter boundaries of the stadiums will help him use his power hitting to clear the boundaries with ease, while he can also use this platform to get rhythm into his bowling.

It remains to be seen whether these players, or anyone else, gets that call up for the IPL 2022, but no matter what, we are in for an exciting season ahead.
