Ravichandran Ashwin goes past Kapil Dev’s Test Wicket Tally
Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s off-spinner, said on Sunday, March 6, that he never imagined surpassing great all-rounder Kapil Dev’s Test wicket total when he began his career and expressed gratitude to the game for everything it has given him.
On the third day of India’s first Test match against Sri Lanka in Mohali, the 35-year-old bowler surpassed Kapil’s record of 434 wickets in the long format to become India’s second-highest wicket-taker behind Anil Kumble (619).
Ashwin accomplished the milestone in the second innings when he removed Lanka’s Charith Asalanka. The tourists were unable to resist the Indian spinners and lost by an innings and 222 runs.
Ashwin did so in 85 matches, 46 fewer than Kapil’s 131.
It should be noted that Kapil Dev also took his record-breaking 432nd wicket against Sri Lanka in an Ahmedabad Test match in 1994. On that occasion, he passed New Zealand’s Richard Hadlee to become the world’s highest wicket-taker in the long format.
